The New York State Senate passed Assembly Bill 7033D (Calendar 565), an act to amend the Arts and Cultural Affairs Law establishing a cultural district in Little Yemen, the Bronx, by a vote of 58-1. Sen. Walczyk cast the sole vote in opposition. Sen. Fernandez, speaking in support, praised the Yemeni community in the Van Nest neighborhood for its vibrant culture, economic contributions, and resilience. She noted that the community has created thousands of jobs through diverse businesses including restaurants, clothing stores, and community centers, and highlighted the upcoming opening of what will be the state's largest mosque. She also referenced the community's activism against discrimination, including organizing a bodega strike in response to the Muslim ban. The cultural district designation is intended to welcome tourism and business while honoring the community's contributions to New York State.
