The New York State Senate passed legislation amending the Retirement and Social Security Law, allowing public sector retirees to earn more than the current $35,000 limit in additional income from similar public-sector employment. The bill (S3144D, Calendar No. 1740), sponsored by Sen. Mannion, passed on a 61-1 roll call vote. Sen. Mannion argued the measure addresses critical workforce shortages across the state in law enforcement, education, transportation and other sectors. "We need to continue to provide these services; the challenges that exist are even greater," Mannion said. Only Sen. Ortt voted against the measure. The bill takes effect immediately.
