S3781

An act to amend the Social Services Law — 2025-05-22 · Calendar #725

The New York State Senate passed legislation sponsored by Sen. Brisport that would provide suitcases to foster children in the state, replacing the plastic trash bags many currently use to carry their belongings. The bill, S3781, passed on a roll call vote with 57 ayes. In remarks before voting, Brisport said foster children's possessions represent symbols of identity, history and worth in a system that often strips them of dignity. 'Ensuring that young people in our foster care system are provided a suitcase to carry and protect their belongings is literally the least we can do for them,' Brisport said. The measure amends the Social Services Law and takes effect 120 days after becoming law. Brisport said he looks forward to Assembly passage and the governor's signature.
