The New York State Senate passed legislation Tuesday that prohibits the sharing of E-ZPass license plate tracking data with other states for law enforcement purposes related to reproductive health. Senate Print 7713, sponsored by Sen. Krueger, passed on a 40-19 vote. The measure comes as women from states with abortion restrictions increasingly travel to New York and other states to access reproductive healthcare. Sen. Krueger cited the case of a Texas woman tracked via 83,000 cameras after obtaining an abortion out of state, arguing the bill is necessary to protect women's privacy and prevent interstate law enforcement surveillance. Nineteen senators voted against the measure, including Ashby, Borrello, Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, Chan, Gallivan, Griffo, Helming, Mattera, Oberacker, O'Mara, Ortt, Palumbo, Rhoads, Rolison, Stec, Tedisco, Walczyk, Weber, and Weik. The bill takes effect 30 days after becoming law.
