The New York State Senate passed legislation Tuesday that creates a distinct racial and ethnic category for Middle Eastern and North African residents in state data collection systems. Senate Print 811, sponsored by Sen. Michael Gianaris, amends the Executive Law to replace the current classification of MENA communities as white with a separate category. The measure passed on a 61-0 vote. Gianaris said the change will provide more accurate demographic data to better serve these communities and follows the successful precedent established for Asian communities. He characterized the bill as an important statement of support for immigrant communities during a period of heightened fear and anxiety. The legislation takes effect immediately.

The New York State Senate passed S811, sponsored by Sen. Breslin, an act to amend the Insurance Law. The bill received 62 affirmative votes in a roll call vote and will take effect on the same date and in the same manner as a chapter of the Laws of 2022. No floor debate was recorded on the measure.
